On June 3, 2024, Larian Studios announced in a Steam news post that official modding support is comming to 2023 GOTY title Baldur’s Gate 3. The support is currently slated for release in September 2024 as part of Patch 7.
Coming to you this September, the next major update for Baldur’s Gate 3 will also introduce an officially sanctioned toolkit for giving Lae’zel a mullet. I mean, sure, go for it. You only live once.
– Community Update #27 Offical Modding Support
The modding toolkit will be available for private and public testing in various phases:
- Phase 1 (Closed Alpha) will be conducted with a small team of community modders who will help guide the modding toolkit development process.
- Phase 2 (Closed Beta) will begin taking registration for approximately 1,000 players with the intention of having PC players test the mods developed in Phase 1.
In their FAQ, Larian mentions that including offical modding support for the game will help make mods more stable for players and less likely to result in save/game breaking updates in the future. Modding support is going to first be available to only PC players, but will eventually come to Mac and console players. Players will be able to download and manage their mods directly from Baldur’s Gate 3. Additionally, players will be able to manage their multiplayer and save game files through a verification UI.
Modding Platform & Restrictions
Some Steam players may not enjoy this, but the modding in Baldur’s Gate 3 is going to be facilitated using a service called Mod.io. The reasoning for this is to allow the mods to be enjoyed by players regardless of platform. Larian also mentions that scripting changes and “NSFW” mods will not be hosted on the modding pipeline, but mentions that the toolkit can be used to make said mods.
The modding toolkit will allow players to do the following:
- Access to the game editor for mod creation
- Upload mods directly to Mod.io servers
- Load levels in a read-only mode so modders can see the location of objects in the game world
- Get access to internal editors for support asset types
- Publish the mod from the editor where it will be sent for moderation (or can package locally for third-party distribution)
- Mod UIs through file editing (documentation to come)
